Shoulder Pain

The shoulder is a very mobile joint with a high level of internal co-ordination. If some of those internal components change or become dysfunctional, pain and decreased movement can occur.

Repetitive movements of the shoulder can lead an imbalance in the local supportative muscle groups. When this happens, the shoulder can tend toward Impingement or other rotator cuff muscle disorders. The shoulder joint capsule can become inflamed and in some cases can become a ‘Frozen Shoulder’ (also known as Adhesive Capsulitis).

Woman suffering from sholder pain

Sometimes, dysfunction of the shoulder can lead toward a compression of the blood vessels and nerves supplying the arm and hand. This condition is called Thoracic Outlet Syndrome and is characterised by numbness, pins and needles and pain in the arm and hand.

Chiropractors have a range of techniques to assess and treat shoulder dysfunction- joint mobilisation and muscle stretching/massage are employed, as well as maintaining good rib, spine and neck function. Identification and patient education/awareness of the problem are important- effective long-term postural change and activity modification are vital for change to happen and to avoid relapses.

Healthcare Tips

Pillows!

Having a good night’s sleep is crucial to good health. The pillow you use should support your neck in as neutral a position as possible whether you’re on your side or your back. Modern contoured pillows are ideal as they will support you in either position. You need one which keeps your neck supported when you’re comfortable, so a bit of measurement, and trial and error is usually the way forward!
